As the second piece of coursework for our Game and Media Creation module, we were tasked with designing and implementing a narrative game.
When it came to brainstorming what our game, as well as the storyline, would be our group decided to not follow along with the Hero's Journey narrative plot, instead we wanted to follow a detective them and plot.
Once we decided on the theme, we brainstormed on what the game would be about as well as settings and characters. There was an initial debate on two proposed ideas for the game, the first was to create a chessboard and have the chess pieces as the players and the second was to have a game based on a Detective that worked with his protégé. Various members of the group liked some elements from the first idea and others liked elements of the second idea.
In a compromise we designed a game that was based on the detective storyline, however, this detective would be working on an old case that never got solved since he investigated it the first time round. Therefore, having the detective run through the case again, but this time in his study using games pieces to represent the various characters and having them be interacted with on different game boards as locations.
My main areas of contribution to this game was to help create and finalise the narrative of the game and to create the 2D art assets and UI elements. I'll explain in more detail on each of these in the next posts.
