I'm sorry I had to share :)

As it is December and our finale of this project it thought it would be quite fitting.

This week the last week of term. Which means we are nearing the end of the Mantaway project.

If you have stuck with it and followed my journey through this project. I want to say thank you and I hope you enjoyed the journey as much as I have!

As I mentioned last time I was making the level select screen more stylised.

Tada!!

I must say, I am very please with how this has turned out

To make this more stylised and painted. I took the main colour background from the first draft, created a new layer and made it a clipping mask and used a very light cyan and a greenish cyan colours to draw the light rays, alternating the colours. I then took a flat, paintbrush grain, brush on Procreate (the app where I have designed all the 2D assets) and smudged them so they blurred.

For the water surface is used a variety of cyan colours, some very turquoise, some more green and some more navy blue. I then used a technical brush and drew wavy lines to create the illusion of moving water with the different colours as the mix of dark and light creates highlights and shadows.

Then finally the boat. I picked a shade that was a fraction lighter than the main page background and followed the same steps of making a new layer and making that layer a clipping mask. However, I chose to use a spray-paint brush for the boat as I wanted a finer detail without having to smooth the shading. I made a spray paint effect working from light cyan to a mid greenish colour and then a dark navy for under the boat. The greenish shade starts around the same level as the water as there are a fair amount of green shades in the surface colours and it would therefore be reflected at that level on the boat colour. But we can't forget about about shadows, and that it why I used the dark navy to line the underside edge of the boat as that is the place that will get the least sunlight.

As for the shadows on the ocean floor and caustics (for those who don't know, caustics is the accurate name for the effects of light being reflected by water) I decided to have creative license with it. As you can't really see a lot of the shadows prominently in the game, I decided it made more sense to leave them out. Also, I'm trying to think minimalistic as I doubt you'd see that detail as the lighting is directly above the corals.

Lastly, there is a hidden easter egg in that image...there will be a hint at the end. Try find it first before looking the hint

It has been really fun making this game and I really enjoyed working with my group, I hope you enjoyed reading along.

Until the next project!
Chanae

HINT: Our game name is hidden in the picture...see if you can find it :)
